Key Takeaways:
  1. Coronavirus 2019-nCoV is from the same family as the common cold
  2. Coronavirus is spread either by direct contact with an infected person, by droplets released by coughing and sneezing, or by touching an infected surface and then touching one’s face
  3. Transmission rate is relatively high
  4. There is no “cure” as this is a virus; however, infected individuals who are in good health are expected to recover
There are proactive steps individuals and companies can take to drastically reduce the likelihood of infection
What is the 2019-nCoV?
2019n-CoV is a newly discovered coronavirus, a large family of viruses that can cause respiratory illnesses such as the common cold. Most people get infected with coronaviruses at some point in their lives, but symptoms are typically mild to moderate. In some cases, the viruses can lead to lower-respiratory tract illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchitis.  For the immune compromised or elderly or infants, the complications can be fatal, but most healthy adults will recover.
什么是2019- nCoV?
What is the source?
These viruses are common amongst animals worldwide, but only a handful of them are known to affect humans. Rarely, coronaviruses can evolve and spread from animals to humans. This is what happened with the coronaviruses known as the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-Cov), both of which are known to cause more severe symptoms.
Health impact: symptoms, short term, long term
Symptoms of the new coronavirus include fever, cough and difficulty breathing. These symptoms are similar to those caused by SARS.
Despite sharing some symptoms that are similar to SARS, there are some important differences, such as the absence of upper respiratory tract symptoms like runny nose, sneezing and sore throat and intestinal symptoms like diarrhea, which affected 20% to 25% of SARS patients, Bin Cao, from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital and the Capital Medical University, both in Beijing, said in a statement.
There are no specific treatments for coronavirus infections, and most people will recover on their own, according to the US CDC.  Treatment involves rest and medication to relieve symptoms.
How is it transmitted?
Human to human transmission has been confirmed by China’s national health commission. Coronaviruses are most commonly spread from an infected person to others through:
  • The air by coughing and sneezing
  • Close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands
  • Touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands
  • Rarely, fecal contamination
  • Viruses may also be transported on clothing, particularly shoe and other footwear which has been worn outside
  • Viruses that are encased in biological fluid (saliva, urine, feces, bacteria) are much more survivable
What to do if you suspect you are sick?
If you have recently travelled to Wuhan or Hubei province, been in contact with someone who is sick, or you have cold or flu-like symptoms, it is recommended to go to one of the approved hospitals which can test for the virus.
How to protect yourself?
There is currently no vaccine to prevent 2019-nCoV infection. For individuals, the best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
In public or densely populated areas such as the metro or shopping mall, wear an N95 or higher rated mask, ensuring the fit around the nose, china and cheeks is tight
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; if soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
What can companies or organizations do now and in preparation for long term management?
Businesses can take action to limit viral spread within their organizations, plan for business continuity, and alleviate staff concerns about coming back to work. We recommend a phased approach that starts with immediate and individual protective measures, creates an environment that is hostile to virus transmission, and then maintains this through proactive measurement and management.
Phase 1: Provide for individual protection i.e. masks, hand washing/sanitizing and education on preventative measures.
Phase 2: Company and building policies and actions including entry disinfection, temperature and humidity control, maximizing ventilation and filtration, and property cleaning and sanitizing surfaces:
  • Cough screens at reception and other incoming areas
  • Temperature screening for all visitors and staff
  • Revised incling material handling procedures
  • Work from home policy or flexible hours
  • Staggered lunch breaks
  • Relocate work stations to avoid close contact
  • Reduce time of face to face meetings and increase physical distance between people
Phase 3: Implement ongoing measurement of environmental conditions that are hostile to viruses and audit success of facility management actions.
